Project Description:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can serve as a critical enabler to achieve many of the development goals agreed to by world leaders at the UN Millennium Summit. ICT is transforming the global economy and creating new networks that cross cultures as well as great distances. But access to and use of these technologies remains extremely uneven. Bangladesh is orienting its legal framework and institutional capacities to foster widespread adoption and absorption of ICT so as to attract the relevant national and international investment for infrastructure, enterprise, services and capacity development. This PA intends to strengthen the regulatory framework to enable broader participation, for enhancing timely access to affordable telecommunications services at acceptable quality and to bridge the digital divide.
This PA will establish computer aided Regulatory Information System; Interconnections of licensed operator networks; network of consumers societies with BTRC; review and customize generic licensing requirements to facilitate realization of the sector policy and the sector performance targets and formulate a full scale project document.
This initiative contributes in achieving the Millenium Development Goal (MDG 8); develop a global partnership for development and Target-18 of MDG-8; and in co-operation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.
The total cost of the project will be US $ 419,425.00 i.e. Tk.244.54 lac [foreign currency 126.87 lac Taka & local currency (RPA) 117.67 lac Taka].
